Former Black Stars and Ghanaian football legend Osei Kofi has added his voice to the ongoing captaincy issue surrounding the Black Stars as he says current skipper Asamoah Gyan is a good leader.

There have been some football fans who have bashed the captain for not been a good fit and even called for him to be stripped off the captaincy.

Osei Kofi believes Gyan has exhibited good qualities as a leader and deserves some praises.

“He has helped the team very well, at least he has bailed Black Stars with his own cash about two or three times,”

“So I will not agree with anyone that says Gyan has flopped because even at his age he is still a better number 9 than many,” he said on Asempa FM.

Gyan, 32, has come under severe criticisms over the last few days from broadcaster Nana Aba Anamoah and even former Black Stars teammate Prince Tagoe.

The pair all questioned Gyan’s captaincy and that got to the player who took to Instagram to pour out his anger.

He has however apologized to Ghanaians for his public outrage and retracted his statements.

He is Ghana’s top scorer with 51 goals and Africa’s all-time top scorer at the World Cup with 6 goals.

Gyan has played in Italy, France, England, China among other countries and is one of the most successful footballers in Ghana.

He is currently playing for Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor.

Osei Kofi was a joint top scorer in the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Tunis, Tunisia leading to Ghana winning the tournament for the second time.

He played for Asante Kotoko F.C.

Osei Kofi apparently turned down a financial incentive to play in Europe at his prime in 1969. He later became a priest.
