The Ashanti Regional Highway Police Patrol Unit have arrested a Toyota Corolla Saloon car with registration number AS 1108-17 on the Kumasi-Obuasi highway loaded with guns and ammunition.
The suspects Mahama Abubakari 40, and Ibrahim Owusu Sekyere 37, have all been arrested by the police. According to the Ashante Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Juliana Obeng, further checks discovered a white sack containing an AK47 assault rifle and 56 rounds of live ammunition.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, ASP Juliana Obeng disclosed that the suspects attempted to bribe their way through by offering GHc3,500 cash but the police refused and arrested them instantly.
The Police PRO told the media that one of the suspects, Mahama Abubakari has claimed ownership of the weapons but mentioned one Amadu Yakubu, a 51-year-old Ivorian as the one behind the supply.
The police say Mahama has admitted during an interrogation that he collected the weapons from the Ivorian at Nyamoransa, near Cape Coast in the Central Region to be sold in Kumasi for a fee.
Juliana Obeng indicated that Amadu Yakubu, the supplier who had travelled to Kumasi to collect the proceeds of the sale was also arrested by the police on Sunday at about 1:30 pm. The Police PRO added that the Ivorian, Amadu Yakubu has also admitted to the police that he got the weapons during the Ivory Coast civil unrest and brought some to Ghana for sale.
The suspects are currently in police custody assisting in further investigations.
