The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Box Office Sports Promotion, Alex Ntiamoah, says he will not immediately drag Brimah Kamoko to court, hoping the boxer and his managers will make good their pledge to refund the GHc17,000 paid to him as part of his purse over a fight that never materialised.
Last week, after exhausting all the legal channels of redress of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Ntiamoah was given the go ahead by the GBA to pursue his financial tussle with Bukom Banku in court in a bid to get his money refunded but he says that will not be the immediate option after receiving an assurance of a payment plan from the boxer’s managers.
In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Ntiamoah said,“As it stands now, I’ll not be taking the matter to court yet because Banku’s managers have assured me of payment after his next fight in December. I would want to trust them to redeem that promise.”
The promoter,however, indicated that he would advice himself if the boxer’s management fail to redeem their pledge to commence payment from the purse of his bout in December.
“I am waiting for that to happen, but if they fail to redeem their pledge to me, then I will decide on what next to do to recoup my money,” he noted.
While debunking reports that the Disciplinary Committee of the GBA had suspended the boxer’s licence, Mr Ntiamoah explained that the ruling from the GBA was for him to go to court if he so wished and thus gave him the legal backing to do so. Alternatively, it threatened not to issue the boxer with release letters to fight until he agrees to a payment plan, which his managers did.
Bukom Banku, a cruiserweight boxer, is reported to have failed to refund an amount of GHc 17,000 he took from Mr Ntiamoah from a contractual agreement to have a rematch bout with Bastie Samir in 2017.
Banku suffered his first loss in the initial bout which generated a huge interest from local fans.
As a result of that interest, both fighters agreed to a rematch and accordingly signed a contract following which an amount of GHc17,000 which was part payment of the agreed purse, was advanced to Banku to commit him to the rematch.
However, he chickened out of the rematch and also failed to refund the money despite several efforts from the promoter.
The GBA also called on the boxer and his managers to refund the money to the promoter but that did not yield an result, compelling the GBA Disciplinary Committee to rule on the matter by sanctioning a court action against Banku.
Meanwhile, Bukom Banku is looking forward to returning to the ring for the second time this year next month following a knockout win over Hungary’s Ferenc Alebert last September in the United Kingdom to mark his first international fight outside Africa.
