Ghanaian Highlife artiste, Kwaisey Pee, has bemoaned the lack of mature and popular highlife DJs in the country.

According to him, the new crop of DJs does not represent the highlife music genre observing that they rather prefer to play songs that appeal to their generation who are fixated on snap chats and twerking.

Speaking to Empire FM, he said, ‘There are no more mature and popular DJs/presenters who represent the Highlife music genre. Rather, there are too many young DJs in the industry at the moment who don’t enjoy classical/mature music. They rather prefer to play songs that appeal to their generation, songs for the boss chicks and slay queens, songs for twerking, snap-chat and what not.’

The ‘Sha Ahwenea’ hitmaker blamed DJs and presenters for killing highlife music complaining that highlife musicians have been neglected.

Kwaisey Pee accused Ghanaian DJs of choosing Nigerian songs over Ghanaian music adding that the proliferation of unprofessional DJs has rendered young highlife musicians such as Kumi Guitar, Akwaboah, eShun and others redundant.

‘They fail to realise where Hiplife or even the current Afro-pop originated from. The Davidos, Wizkids, Flavours are actually doing Highlife but because we’re considered old-school they don’t even pay attention to anything we produce,” he complained.

He debunked assertion that the likes of K.K Fosu, Kofi B and himself are fading out of the entertainment scene.
