Nigerian rapper Ruggedman, born Michael Ugochukwu Stephens, says he is not bothered that young musicians haven’t recognised him for o his contributions to the industry.
‘Ruggedie Baba’, as he affectionately called by his fans, is deemed a pioneer in rap music in Nigeria.
The rapper told JoyNews’ MzGee in an interview that he gave Nigerian hip-hop music a face with the introduction of local rap lines.
“I am very proud of myself because one of the songs I refer to the most is the song I did with 9ice, it is called ‘Ruggedie Baba’. In that particular song I was talking about putting a face to Nigerian music,” he recounted.
“Talking hiphop, we really didn’t have a face so I just preach about putting a face to it and I talked about using our Nigerian language, our local languages to do music which was what everybody started doing afterwards.
Every song that has been hit from then till now has been a song that had the Nigerian local language in it so I am very proud of myself,” he added.
