Kesha Rose Sebert took time out from her birthday celebrations to shine light on the shadowy diseases that are eating disorders.
The pop artist, who turned 30 on Wednesday, shared her own personal account in a call to others facing similar health problems to come forward and get help.
“I had an eating disorder that threatened my life, and was very afraid to confront it,” she explained in a social-media post. “I got sicker and the whole world kept telling me how much better I looked. That’s why I realized I wanted to be a part of the solution.”
The pop artist has opened up in the past on her struggles with self-image. “I’ve decided to stay confident in my ever-changing, totally imperfect body,” Kesha said at the Billboard Women in Music 2016 ceremony, where she was honored with the Trailblazer award.
According to organizers of NEDAwareness Week, some 30 million Americans will struggle at some point in their lives with an eating disorder, such as bulimia, binge-eating disorder and anorexia. The theme of this year’s campaign is “It’s time to talk about it”.
In support of the awareness campaign, Kesha shared a “screening tool” which can help instruct a user if it’s time to seek professional help.
