Vote counting is under way in Liberia with the main focus on the candidate who will replace out-going President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
But there are also of 984 candidates competing for 73 seats in the house of representatives.
The New York Times has profiled one of them – Joseph Duo, who was captured in an iconic picture by the late photographer Chris Hondros during the country’s civil war in 2003.
He had been celebrating a successful launch of a rocket-propelled grenade at rebels during the country’s civil war which killed more than 250,000 people.
Mr Hondros, who died in Libya in 2011, struck a friendship with Mr Duo helping him to study criminal justice at a university in Liberia.
Now at 40, Mr Duo has parliamentary ambitions.
