President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged people of the Western Region to lift up their maintenance culture to protect the lifespan of the Atuabo Gas Power Plant for the benefit of the country and future generations.

According to him, the backbone of the Ghanaian economy will be anchored on the existence of the plant hence there is the need to safeguard it.

Addressing people of the region on the second day of his tour of the area on Tuesday, 8 August 2017, Nana Akufo-Addo said whilst working around the clock to fix the people’s demands for free port and environmental safety, residents ought to be on the forefront to sustain the most critical gas infrastructure in the country.

“So much of the future of our country is bound up with this plant. …If, indeed, we are going to succeed and be able to transform the nature of the Ghanaian economy moving from an agrarian-based economy producing raw material to an industrial value added economy, Atuabo is absolutely critical and seeing you and hearing you, I know that this asset is in safe hands,” he stated.

“You have a modern progressive chief who should be looking after assets such as this. Environmental safety and of course the conception of the free port are all extremely important and absolutely on point. I want to add though, something and that is an appeal to everybody here. One of the problems we’ve had in our past is that we have been very poor in maintaining things in Ghana but with your leadership here and understanding of the issue, we’ll insist that the maintenance of the plant is absolutely vital for the future prosperity of our country and the wellbeing of the plant,” Mr Akufo-Addo added.
