A soldier and member of the Ghana Armed Forces Central Band has eulogized his comrade and superior, Major Maxwell Adam Mahama by performing a dirge in his honour.
Recounting some of the operations in which he participated with the late Major Mahama, Corporal Fresher indicated that the fallen soldier will be missed by all.
A tribute read by the Operations Officer at the 5 Infantry Battalion also noted that Major Mahama was a lively person who was a vital member of their football team. He recalled how he was fondly referred to as ‘poacher’ since he always scored their goals in games.
A Vigil Service was held at the Ankara Mess at Burma Camp in honour of the late Major Mahama as part of a two-week funeral ceremony for the soldier.
The officer was lynched by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central region after he was mistaken for an armed robber. The soldier had gone for a morning trek and decided to strap himself with his handgun for safety.
Preliminary investigations by the police suggest he stopped to interact with some snail sellers and even bought some which he left with the women with the intention of picking them on his return from the jogging. When he took money from his pocket to pay for the snails, one saw his pistol and later informed the assemblyman of Denkyira Obuasi of what she had seen.
According to the police, without verifying the identity of Captain Mahama, the assemblyman and armed townsfolk accosted the military officer, gave him a chase, shot at him, and eventually pounced on him using cement blocks, clubs, among others, until he died around 10am on Monday, two hours after he had started the jogging.
