Ghanaian-American Maame Biney eliminated from Winter Olympics

Ghanaian born speed skater, Maame Biney, was eliminated from the 500m after finishing fourth in her quarterfinal heat with a time of 44.772 seconds.

Representing the United States, Biney got off to an uncharistically slow start and was unable to recover

Sofia Prosvirnova (OAR) and Fan Kexin (CHN) advanced out of Biney’s heat.

Biney still has another event left in PyeongChang, as she also qualified for the 1500m on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 5:00 a.m.

Biney was born in Accra, Ghana, at the age of five, she visited her father who was living in the United States and decided she liked the U.S. and wanted to stay with him.

She began skating when she was six years old after she and her father passed a sign on the side of the road in Northern Virginia advertising skating lessons.

Biney began figure skating but soon switched to speed skating on a coach’s recommendation.
