Silva scores hat-trick as AC Milan wins 5-1 in Vienna

Andre Silva scored a hat-trick as AC Milan began their Europa League campaign by thrashing Austria Vienna.

Silva was signed from Porto for £34m by Milan, who are competing in Europe for the first time in four years.

The Italians spent around £170m in the summer and new recruit Hakan Calhanoglu put them ahead with a thumping drive. Ex-Liverpool player Suso netted the fifth after Silva’s treble.

Defender Alexandar Borkovic powerfully headed in from a corner for Vienna.

Turkish midfielder Calhanoglu – bought for £22m from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen – ran the game for Vincenzo Montella’s side, providing two assists in addition to his goal.

Milan host Udinese in Serie A on Sunday, after being thrashed 4-1 by Lazio in their last domestic outing.

Match report: Atalanta 3-0 Everton Everton were well beaten by Atalanta, as French side Lyon drew 1-1 against Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol. Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay scored a penalty for the Ligue 1 club.

Former Norwich and Hull striker Dieumerci Mbokani was on the scoresheet for Dynamo Kiev as they defeated Albanian side Skenderbeu 3-1.

Bundesliga side Hoffenheim, beaten by Liverpool in the Champions League play-off round, lost 2-1 at home to Braga.

Former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic scored as Russian club Zenit St-Petersburg beat Varda 5-0 in Macedonia.

Italian club Lazio came from behind twice to beat Vitesse 3-2 in the Netherlands.

Former Manchester City and Liverpool forward Mario Balotelli scored as French side Nice won 5-1 away to Belgium’s Waregem.

Swedish minnows Ostersunds, who beat Galatasaray en route to reaching the group stages, beat Zorya Luhansk in Ukraine 2-0. Ostersunds are managed by Englishman Graham Potter, the former Stoke and West Brom full-back, and the starting line-up included former York City youth-team player Jamie Hopcutt.
